Baby Bear Hat Pattern
This sweet Baby Bear Hat is designed for newborns and features cute little ears and a cozy fit. With simple stitches, this project is perfect for beginners to practice their knitting skills.
Materials
- Soft gray worsted weight yarn (about 100 yards)
- Size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Gauge
16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Abbreviations
- CO = Cast On
- k = Knit
- p = Purl
- st(s) = Stitch(es)
- RS = Right Side
- WS = Wrong Side
Instructions
Hat Body
- CO 64 stitches onto your knitting needle.
- Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
- Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 5 rounds.
- Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every round) and continue until the hat measures 5 inches from the cast-on edge.
Crown Shaping
- Begin decreasing: - Round 1: *K12, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around (vertices of decrease).
- Round 2: Knit all stitches.
- Round 3: *K11, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around.
- Round 4: Knit all stitches.
- Round 5: *K10, k2tog*; repeat from * to * around.
- Round 6: Knit all stitches.
- Continue this pattern, decreasing the k count until you reach 8 stitches left.
- For the last round, k2tog around until 4 stitches remain.
- Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull the tail through the last 4 stitches and tighten securely. Weave in ends.
Ears (Make 2)
- CO 6 stitches.
- Knit 6 rows.
- Fold the piece in half and use the yarn tail to stitch the sides together, leaving the top open.
- Attach the ears to the top of the hat with the yarn tail, weaving in any loose ends.
Finishing
Weave in any remaining ends, and your Baby Bear Hat is ready to be worn or gifted! Enjoy your new creation!
