Striped Chunky Knit Sweater

Materials

  • Yarn: Bulky weight yarn (approximately 600 yards total) in the following colors:
    • Color A: Olive Green (200 yards)
    • Color B: Light Beige (200 yards)
    • Color C: Teal Blue (200 yards)
  • Needles: Size 10.5 US (6.5 mm) knitting needles
  • Circular needles: Size 10.5 US (6.5 mm), 32 inches long
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Gauge

12 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch using bulky yarn.

  • CO: Cast On
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • RS: Right Side
  • WS: Wrong Side
  • St(s): Stitch(es)
  • BO: Bind Off

Instructions

Body

  1. Using Color A, CO 70 stitches onto the circular needle.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
  3. Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 3 inches to create the bottom hem.
  4. Switch to stockinette stitch (K every round) and continue for 10 inches.
  5. Begin color block pattern:
    • Change to Color B, knit for 5 inches.
    • Change to Color C, knit for 5 inches.
    • Change back to Color A, knit for 5 inches.
    • Repeat this color pattern until the body measures 20 inches from the hem.
    • To shape the armholes, BO 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rounds.

Sleeves

  1. Using Color A, CO 30 stitches onto the circular needle.
  2. Join in the round and work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 2 inches.
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch and continue for 8 inches.
  4. Change color as per the body’s color block pattern, repeating it for 5 inches.
  5. To finish, BO all stitches and leave a long tail for sewing.
  6. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Assembly

  1. Using the tapestry needle, sew the sleeves onto the body at the armholes.
  2. Weave in all loose ends.
  3. Block your sweater by wetting it slightly and laying it flat to dry in shape.
