This cozy baby beanie features a stunning design with alternating colors and a button accent, perfect for little ones. The hat is made using soft yarn to ensure comfort, and its size accommodates newborns to small infants.
Materials
- Yarn: 1 skein of cream-colored worsted weight yarn (approx. 100g) and 1 skein of navy blue worsted weight yarn (approx. 100g)
- Button: 1 medium-sized button for decoration
- Hook: Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
4 inches = 12 stitches in single crochet. However, gauge is not crucial for this project.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- hdc = half double crochet
Instructions
Base of the Beanie
- Make a slip knot and chain 4. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc 11 into the ring. Join with a sl st in the top of the first hdc (total 12 hdc).
- Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in the same st. Hdc 2 in each st around. Join with a sl st (total 24 hdc).
- Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in the same st, *hdc in next st, hdc 2 in next st; repeat from * around. Join (total 36 hdc).
- Continue increasing until the hat measures approximately 5 inches in diameter. You can stop increasing at Round 4 to keep it smaller.
Stripes
- Switch to navy blue yarn. Ch 1, sc in each hdc around. Join with a sl st.
- Continue alternating every round between cream and navy blue for a total of 4 rounds (2 rounds of each color).
Finishing the Beanie
- After your last navy blue round, work one more round in cream color with sc.
- To shape the top of the hat, decrease by single crocheting two stitches together every fourth stitch until you reach the top of the hat to finish with 12 stitches.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and pull through the last st to secure. Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
Adding the Button
- Choose a desired location on the hat to position the button.
- Using your yarn needle, sew the button securely onto the selected area and weave in any remaining ends.
Final Touches
Ensure the beanie is soft and comfortable for the baby. You can also make matching booties or blankets to complement this hat.
Enjoy your cozy baby beanie, and happy crocheting!
