How to Wind a Vibrant Multi-Colored Yarn Hank Into a Usable Center-Pull Cake

Anonymous • October 05, 2026

Materials Needed:

  • A hank of multi-colored yarn
  • Optional: Yarn swift or the backs of two chairs
  • Optional: Yarn winder or a thumb for hand winding

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Space: Clear a flat surface. If you have a yarn swift, set it up. Alternatively, place two chairs back to back.
  2. Open the Hank: Untwist the skein to form a large loop and place it over the yarn swift or around the backs of the chairs.
  3. Secure the Yarn: Identify and remove the ties keeping the yarn together. Be cautious not to let it tangle.
  4. Find the End: Locate one end of the yarn. If using a yarn winder, secure the end into the winder’s notch.
  5. Wind the Yarn: If using a winder, turn the crank slowly, evenly winding the yarn into a neat cake. If winding by hand, hold the yarn end with your thumb and start wrapping the yarn around your fingers, sliding the skein as you go to maintain tension. Shape it into a ball as needed.
  6. Create a Center Pull: Tuck the yarn’s starting end into the middle of the ball, carefully pulling a small section out to create a center pull mechanism.

Tips:

  • If winding manually, keep tension gentle but consistent to avoid stretching the yarn.
  • Store the finished cake in a bowl or on a stand to avoid it rolling around.
