Crochet Whimsical Colorful Owl Bookmark Free Pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors (body, belly, eyes, and beak)
  • 4.0 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Fiberfill stuffing (optional, for a 3D effect)
  • Plastic safety eyes or black yarn for eyes

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • inc = increase
  • dec = decrease

Instructions:

Owl Body:

  1. Start with color 1 (body), ch 18.
  2. Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc across (17 sc).
  3. Row 2: ch 1, inc in first stitch, sc in next 15 stitches, inc in last stitch (19 sc).
  4. Continue increasing every two rows until you have 29 stitches.
  5. Switch to color 2 (belly). Work 10 rows of sc until the piece measures about 5 inches in total length.
  6. Cut yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.

Wings (Make 2):

  1. With color 2, ch 10.
  2. Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across (9 sc).
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc across.
  4. Row 3: ch 1, turn, dec, sc in next 5, dec (7 sc).
  5. Row 4: ch 1, turn, dec, sc in next 3, dec (5 sc).
  6. Row 5: ch 1, turn, dec, sc in next, dec (3 sc).
  7. Finish off. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Beak:

  1. With color 3, ch 4.
  2. Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook, inc (3 sc).
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc across (3 sc).
  4. Finish off. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly:

  1. Attach the wings to either side of the owl body using the yarn needle.
  2. Sew the beak in the center, just below the eyes.
  3. For eyes, attach plastic safety eyes or embroider with black yarn.
  4. Optional: Stuff the head with fiberfill for a more pronounced 3D shape.
  5. To create the bookmark tail, chain 40 with color 1 and attach it to the bottom of the owl using a sl st.

Finishing:

Weave in all loose ends, and your whimsical owl bookmark is ready to add joy to your reading experience!
