Pumpkin Ridge Croc Bandeau Vest — Free Crochet Pattern for Beginners

Introduction

If you have ever looked at a crocodile-stitch project and thought "that looks way too advanced for me," this is the pattern that will change your mind. The Pumpkin Ridge Croc Bandeau Vest is a short, straight tube worked in stacked crocodile-stitch scales that look exactly like the ribs of a little pumpkin, banded in alternating cherry red and bubblegum pink sport-weight cotton. It is perfect for a teen or a small adult who wants a fitted, slightly space-age slipover that slips on over a tee or a camisole and instantly looks like something from a magazine. There are no armholes, no neck shaping, and no sewing pieces together — you simply work one tube from the bottom up. The finished vest is about 30 inches around and 13 inches long, soft and matte, with a gentle stretch that hugs the body and a texture you will not be able to stop touching. If you can make a double crochet, you can make this.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Sport weight cotton (CYC category 2 / fine), approximately 350–420 yd [320–385 m] total.
    • Color A — cherry red: approx. 200–240 yd
    • Color B — bubblegum pink: approx. 150–180 yd
  • Main hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook
  • Edging hook: 3.0 mm crochet hook (US size between D/3 and E/4 — use the smallest hook you have close to 3.0 mm)
  • Stitch markers (at least 2 — one for the join, one spare)
  • Tapestry needle (blunt tip, large eye) for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape for your gauge swatch

Finished size: Teen / Small. Flat, unstretched measurements: circumference 30 in [76 cm], length 13 in [33 cm] from bottom edge to top edge. The tube has about 2 in [5 cm] of negative ease against a 32 in [81 cm] bust and stretches to fit comfortably.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

  • ch — chain. Yarn over the hook, pull the loop through the loop already on your hook. This makes the foundation "braid" you build on.
  • sl st — slip stitch. Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull that loop straight through both the stitch and the loop on your hook. It joins things without adding height.
  • sc — single crochet. Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops. One loop remains.
  • dc — double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops.
  • FPDC — front post double crochet. Work a double crochet, but instead of going into the top of the stitch, insert your hook horizontally around the post (the vertical body) of the stitch from the front, so the new stitch sits in front of the fabric. This creates the raised "post" that the scales wrap around.
  • BPDC — back post double crochet. Same idea as FPDC, but insert the hook around the post from the back. (Listed for reference; not used in this pattern.)
  • st(s) — stitch(es).
  • sp — space (the gap between stitches).
  • join with sl st — after working all the way around, slip stitch into the first stitch of the round to close the circle.
  • Crocodile Scale — a fan of stitches worked around a pair of FPDC posts: 3 dc down the first post, ch 1, 3 dc up the second post, ch 1, sl st at the top to close. Full instructions are in the pattern below.
  • Fasten off — cut the yarn a few inches from your work and pull the tail all the way through the last loop to lock it.

Gauge

Gauge: 4 dc = 1 in [2.5 cm] wide; 8 dc and 4 scale rows = 4 in [10 cm]. One completed crocodile-scale row (scale base + scale row) = 1 in [2.5 cm] tall.

Why gauge matters: Gauge is how big your stitches turn out. If your stitches are bigger than the pattern's, your vest will be too wide and too long; if they are smaller, it will be too tight to pull on. Because this vest is a fitted tube with only 2 inches of stretch, gauge is the difference between "perfect" and "cannot get it over my shoulders."

How to make a gauge swatch: With your 3.5 mm hook and Color A, chain 20. Work 10 rows of double crochet (ch 2 to start each row, dc in each stitch across). Lay the swatch flat, do not stretch it, and measure 4 inches across the middle. Count how many double crochet stitches fit in those 4 inches — you want 8. Then measure 4 inches up and count rows — you want about 4 scale rows' worth of height. If you have more stitches than 8, switch to a larger hook; if fewer, switch to a smaller hook. Wash and dry your swatch the way you will wash the vest, because cotton can relax.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Use a stitch marker at the join. Place a marker in the first stitch of every round so you always know where the round begins and ends. This tube is 120 stitches around — losing your place is the number one beginner frustration.
  • Do not pull your yarn too tight. Crocodile scales need room to fan out. If your tension is tight, the scales will curl inward and the vest will lose its pumpkin-rib texture. Keep your loops relaxed and even.
  • Count your FPDC posts. Every scale base round should have exactly 60 FPDC posts and 60 plain dc. If you are off by one, the scales will drift out of alignment row after row.
  • Work the scales loosely around the posts. When you work 3 dc down a post, let the stitches sit comfortably — do not yank them. The scale should look like a little shell, not a tight knot.
  • Keep your beginning chain untwisted. Before you join the first round, lay the chain flat on the table and check that the bumps all face the same way. A twist here cannot be fixed later.
  • Change colors at the join. Fasten off one color and join the next at the marker. This keeps the color changes hidden at the back of the tube.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Set-Up

With the 3.5 mm hook and Color A (cherry red), ch 120. Join with sl st to the first ch, being careful not to twist. Place a marker at the join. (120 ch)

Bottom Band

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in each ch around, join with sl st to the top of the ch-2. (120 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with sl st. (120 dc) Fasten off Color A.

Scale Base Rounds

Round 3 (Color B, pink): Ch 2, dc in first st, then work (FPDC around next st, dc in next st) around, join with sl st. (60 FPDC posts, 60 dc = 120 sts)

Round 4 (Color A, cherry red): Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with sl st. (120 dc)

Round 5 (Color B, pink): Ch 2, dc in first st, then work (FPDC around next st, dc in next st) around, join with sl st. (60 FPDC posts, 60 dc = 120 sts)

Scale Row 1 (Color A, cherry red)

Note: Work the scales around the FPDC posts of Round 5, skipping the plain dc between them.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first st. *Skip next 2 sts, work one Crocodile Scale around the next FPDC post and the following FPDC post (3 dc down first post, ch 1, 3 dc up second post, ch 1, sl st at top), skip next 2 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (20 scales) Fasten off Color A.

Scale Row 2 (Color B, pink)

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in each st around, working into the sc and the scale tops so the count returns to 120 dc, join with sl st. (120 dc)

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, (FPDC around next st, dc in next st) around, join with sl st. (60 FPDC posts, 60 dc = 120 sts)

Row 4: Repeat Scale Row 1 using Color B. (20 scales) Fasten off Color B.

Repeat

Repeat Scale Rows 2–4, alternating colors: a cherry red scale row, then a pink scale row, until you have worked 10 crocodile-scale rows total (5 cherry red, 5 pink, alternating). Your last scale row should be pink. Fasten off.

Top Band

Round 1 (Color A, cherry red): Join yarn at the join marker, ch 2, dc in each st around, working into the scale tops and sc as before, join with sl st. (120 dc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (120 sc) Fasten off Color A.

Edging

With the 3.0 mm hook and Color B (pink), join at the bottom edge. Work 1 round of sc evenly around the bottom edge, join with sl st. (120 sc) Repeat around the top edge. (120 sc) Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Assembly and Finishing

No seaming is needed — this vest is worked as one continuous tube, so there are no pieces to sew together. Your finishing work is all about making it look polished.

  • Weave in ends: Thread each yarn tail onto the tapestry needle and run it through the back of about 2 inches of stitches, changing direction once so it cannot work loose. Trim close to the fabric.
  • Blocking: Soak the vest in cool water for 10 minutes, gently squeeze (do not wring) in a towel, then lay it flat on a towel or blocking mat in its finished tube shape — 30 in around, 13 in long. Pat the scales open with your fingers so each one fans out. Let it dry completely away from direct sun or heat. Cotton holds its shape beautifully after this step.
  • Final check: Try the vest on. It should pull on easily and sit snugly without stretching out of shape. If it feels tight, a light re-block with a little more stretch will relax the cotton.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the color story: Swap cherry red and pink for pumpkin orange and cream, or midnight blue and silver, for a completely different mood. Keep the alternation so the scales still read as ribs.
  • Adjust the size: To make the tube wider, add 12 chains to the starting chain (each 12 chains adds 3 inches of circumference and 2 more scales per row). To make it longer, add more scale rows — each scale row adds 1 inch of length.
  • Substitute yarn: Any sport-weight cotton or cotton-blend works. Avoid fuzzy or slippery yarns, which hide the scale texture. Always swatch first, since fiber content changes gauge.
  • Add a tie or trim: Work a simple chain cord in Color A and thread it through the top band for a drawstring detail, or add a picot edging (ch 3, sl st in same st) around the top for extra polish.
