Introducing the Dewdrop Dragon Scale Booties

Wrap tiny toes in mythical texture with these enchanting baby booties, featuring the beloved crocodile stitch in a soft, modern gradient. This pattern transforms a classic technique into a heirloom-quality gift that looks like spun gemstones. Perfect for a baby shower or a special handmade keepsake, these booties are surprisingly beginner-friendly once you master the simple scale repeat.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala in 'Centaur' (or any DK weight gradient yarn, 100% acrylic, 213 yards per cake) – 1 cake will make 2-3 pairs
  • Hook: Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Gauge: First 4 rows of crocodile stitch = 2 inches wide, 1.5 inches tall (blocked)
  • Notions: Yarn needle, 2 small buttons (approx. ½ inch), stitch markers (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes

Worked in continuous rounds unless stated. The crocodile stitch is formed by working a shell of 5 double crochet (dc) into a stitch, then chaining across the back to create the 'scale'. Do not turn your work between rounds; you will always work from the same side.

Sole (make 2)

Round 1: Chain 10. Single crochet (sc) in 2nd chain from hook, sc in next 7 chains, 3 sc in last chain. Working on opposite side of the starting chain, sc in next 7 chains, 2 sc in last chain. (20 sc total)

Round 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in last 2 sc. (26 sc)

Round 3: Sc in first sc, 2 sc in next, sc in next 7, (sc in next, 2 sc in next) repeat 3 times, sc in next 7, (sc in next, 2 sc in next) repeat 2 times. (32 sc)

Round 4: Sc in each sc around. (32 sc) Fasten off. Weave in end.

Upper Bootie (start at toe)

Round 1: Join yarn at center front of sole (toe area). Chain 3 (counts as double crochet), dc in same stitch. *Skip 2 stitches, in next stitch work (dc, chain 1, dc) – this is a V-stitch.* Repeat from * around, join with slip stitch to top of chain 3. (11 V-stitches)

Round 2: Slip stitch into first V-stitch space. Chain 3, 4 dc in same space (this is half a scale). *Chain 1, skip next V-stitch, in next V-stitch work 5 dc (this is a full scale). Chain 1, skip next V-stitch.* Repeat from * around, ending with 5 dc in last V-stitch, chain 1, join with slip stitch to top of first chain 3. (6 scales total)

Round 3: Slip stitch across to the back of the first scale (the chain 1 space behind it). Chain 3, 4 dc in same space. *Chain 1, skip next scale, in chain 1 space behind next scale work 5 dc.* Repeat from * around, join. (6 scales)

Round 4-5: Repeat Round 3. (6 scales each round)

Round 6 (Ankle Cuff): Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, working 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each chain-1 space. (30 sc)

Round 7: Single crochet in each sc around. (30 sc)

Round 8 (Buttonhole Row): Chain 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 sc. *Chain 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next 3 sc.* Repeat from * around, join. (This creates buttonhole loops)

Round 9: Chain 1, single crochet in each dc and chain-1 space around. (30 sc) Fasten off.

Finishing

  • Weave in all ends securely using a yarn needle.
  • Sew a small button on the outside of the ankle, opposite the buttonhole loops. Use the buttonhole loops to fasten the cuff.
  • Repeat entire process for second bootie, ensuring the scales spiral in the same direction for a matching pair.
  • Optional: Add a ribbon or leather lace through the buttonhole row for extra charm.

Your Dewdrop Dragon Scale Booties are now complete! These textured, gradient beauties will be treasured for years to come. Happy crocheting!
