The Urban Nomad Sling Bag: A Free Knitting Pattern for a Textured, Modern Crossbody
Introducing the Urban Nomad Sling Bag
Ditch the flimsy purses and knit yourself a sturdy, stylish companion for your daily adventures. This textured, modern sling bag is the perfect hands-free accessory for the modern maker. With a two-tone design featuring a ribbed front panel and a smooth stockinette back, this bag combines visual interest with practical durability. The long i-cord strap makes it easy to wear crossbody, leaving your hands free for coffee, phone, or exploring the city. Best of all, this pattern is beginner-friendly and uses worsted weight yarn, so you can whip it up in a weekend.

- US 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles (straight or circular for flat panel)
- US 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles (for i-cord strap)

Row 1 (RS): K2, *P2, K2; repeat from * to end.
Row 2 (WS): P2, *K2, P2; repeat from * to end.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for pattern (2x2 Rib) until piece measures 8 inches from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.
Shape Bottom (decrease for curve)

Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times. (24 sts)

Back Panel
Cast on 32 stitches.
Work in Stockinette stitch (knit RS, purl WS) until piece measures 8 inches from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.
Shape Bottom (same as Front)
Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. (30 sts)
Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times. (24 sts)
Knit 2 rows even (garter stitch).
Finishing the Bag Body
Block both pieces to measurements (approx 6.5 inches wide at top, 5 inches wide at bottom, 9 inches tall).
Place Front and Back panels together with WS facing each other. Using tapestry needle and yarn, sew side seams and bottom seam using a mattress stitch or whip stitch, leaving the top open.
Strap (knit as an i-cord)
Using double-pointed needles, cast on 4 stitches.
*Knit 4 stitches, do not turn. Slide stitches to the other end of the needle. Repeat from * until strap measures 45 inches (or desired length). Bind off loosely. Weave in ends.
Assembly
Sew the ends of the i-cord strap securely to the inside of the bag at the top side seams (one end on the front panel, one on the back panel). Ensure the strap is not twisted.
Optional Lining
For extra sturdiness, you can sew a fabric lining (cotton or quilting cotton) to the inside of the bag. Cut two pieces of fabric slightly smaller than the knitted panels, sew them together, and hand-stitch the lining inside the bag.
Optional Closure
Sew a magnetic snap or a button and loop closure to the top center of the bag.
Your Urban Nomad Sling Bag is now complete! Wear it with pride, knowing you crafted a modern, textured accessory that's as functional as it is beautiful.
