Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in deep jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, amethyst, and ruby.
  • Needles: US Size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles, 16-inch length.
  • Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cuff:

  1. Cast on 48 stitches using the emerald yarn. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
  2. Work in 1x1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1) for 10 rounds.

Leg:

  1. Switch to sapphire yarn. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch (knit all stitches).
  2. Change to amethyst yarn. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch.
  3. Change to ruby yarn. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch.
  4. For the asymmetrical effect, on the next round, knit 24 stitches with ruby, then switch to emerald and knit the remaining 24 stitches.
  5. Continue in stockinette stitch, alternating colors every 5 rounds, maintaining the asymmetrical color block.

Heel Flap:

  1. With emerald yarn, work the heel flap over the first 24 stitches:
    • Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, knit 1* repeat to end.
    • Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, purl to end.
  2. Repeat these two rows for a total of 12 rows.

Turn Heel:

  1. Continue with emerald yarn.
  2. Row 1 (RS): Knit 14, k2tog, k1, turn.
  3. Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, purl 5, p2tog, p1, turn.
  4. Row 3: Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before gap, k2tog, k1, turn.
  5. Row 4: Slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
  6. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked.

Gusset:

  1. With sapphire yarn, pick up and knit 12 stitches along the side of the heel flap.
  2. Knit across 24 stitches of the instep in pattern.
  3. Pick up and knit 12 stitches along the other side of the heel flap.
  4. Knit the remaining heel stitches.
  5. Place a marker for the new beginning of the round.
  6. Decrease round: Knit to 3 stitches before instep, k2tog, k1, knit across instep, k1, ssk, knit to end.
  7. Knit 1 round.
  8. Repeat the last two rounds until 48 stitches remain.

Foot:

  1. Continue in stockinette stitch, maintaining the asymmetrical color pattern until the foot measures 2 inches less than your desired length.

Toe:

  1. With ruby yarn, decrease for toe:
    • Round 1: *Knit 6, k2tog* repeat to end.
    • Round 2: Knit.
    • Round 3: *Knit 5, k2tog* repeat to end.
    • Round 4: Knit.
    • Continue decreasing in this manner until 12 stitches remain.

Finishing:

  1. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Use a tapestry needle to thread through remaining stitches and pull tight to close.
  2. Weave in all ends.
  3. Block lightly if desired.

Repeat for the second sock, ensuring the asymmetrical color blocks are mirrored.
