Materials Needed
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in deep jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, amethyst, and ruby.
- Needles: US Size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles, 16-inch length.
- Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Cuff:
- Cast on 48 stitches using the emerald yarn. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
- Work in 1x1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1) for 10 rounds.
Leg:
- Switch to sapphire yarn. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch (knit all stitches).
- Change to amethyst yarn. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch.
- Change to ruby yarn. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch.
- For the asymmetrical effect, on the next round, knit 24 stitches with ruby, then switch to emerald and knit the remaining 24 stitches.
- Continue in stockinette stitch, alternating colors every 5 rounds, maintaining the asymmetrical color block.
Heel Flap:
- With emerald yarn, work the heel flap over the first 24 stitches:
- Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, knit 1* repeat to end.
- Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, purl to end.
- Repeat these two rows for a total of 12 rows.
Turn Heel:
- Continue with emerald yarn.
- Row 1 (RS): Knit 14, k2tog, k1, turn.
- Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, purl 5, p2tog, p1, turn.
- Row 3: Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before gap, k2tog, k1, turn.
- Row 4: Slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
- Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked.
Gusset:
- With sapphire yarn, pick up and knit 12 stitches along the side of the heel flap.
- Knit across 24 stitches of the instep in pattern.
- Pick up and knit 12 stitches along the other side of the heel flap.
- Knit the remaining heel stitches.
- Place a marker for the new beginning of the round.
- Decrease round: Knit to 3 stitches before instep, k2tog, k1, knit across instep, k1, ssk, knit to end.
- Knit 1 round.
- Repeat the last two rounds until 48 stitches remain.
Foot:
- Continue in stockinette stitch, maintaining the asymmetrical color pattern until the foot measures 2 inches less than your desired length.
Toe:
- With ruby yarn, decrease for toe:
- Round 1: *Knit 6, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 2: Knit.
- Round 3: *Knit 5, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 4: Knit.
- Continue decreasing in this manner until 12 stitches remain.
Finishing:
- Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Use a tapestry needle to thread through remaining stitches and pull tight to close.
- Weave in all ends.
- Block lightly if desired.
Repeat for the second sock, ensuring the asymmetrical color blocks are mirrored.
