Cheerful Knitted Post Cover

This fun and vibrant project will transform any boring post into a whimsical character! Ideal for knitters of all skill levels, this pattern features simple stitches and bright colors.

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn in green, red, white, and beige
  • Knitting needles (US size 8 - 5.0 mm)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Buttons for decoration (2 red and 2 white)
  • Optional: stuffing for a 3D effect

Gauge:

20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations:

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • BO = bind off
  • CO = cast on
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side

Instructions:

Body:

  1. CO 40 stitches with green yarn.
  2. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 6 inches (about 12 rows).
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every row) and continue until the body measures 15 inches from the cast on edge.
  4. Begin to shape the top:
    • Row 1: k10, k2tog, repeat to end (32 stitches remain).
    • Row 2: purl all stitches.
    • Row 3: k9, k2tog, repeat to end (24 stitches remain).
    • Row 4: purl all stitches.
    • Row 5: k8, k2tog, repeat to end (16 stitches remain).
    • Row 6: purl all stitches.
    • Row 7: k7, k2tog, repeat to end (8 stitches remain).
  5. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail and thread it through remaining stitches. Pull tight to close the top. Weave in all ends.
  6. Eyes:

    1. With beige yarn, CO 6 stitches. Work in the round until the circle measures 2 inches in diameter.
    2. Change to white yarn: continue for 2 more rows to create a layered eye effect.
    3. Finish with a row of red knitting to create a circle around the button.
    4. Attach buttons as the pupils to the center of the eyes.
    5. Sew eyes onto the body about 5 inches from the bottom and evenly spaced apart.

    Mouth:

    1. Using red yarn, embroider a simple smile beneath the eyes, approximately 4 inches long. Use small stitches for detail.

    Finish:

    Place the knitted cover over the post and adjust for fit. For additional character, add a small red pom-pom on top for a hat and cute ear flaps using red yarn.
