Christmas Baby Outfit Pattern

This pattern guides you through creating a snug Christmas-themed outfit for a baby, complete with a hat and gentle contrast colors. Perfect as a gift or for festive photography!

Materials

  • Red yarn (worsted weight, approx. 200 yards)
  • White yarn (worsted weight, approx. 50 yards)
  • Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles
  • Size 6 (4 mm) knitting needles for ribbing
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

17 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette stitch with size 8 needles. Adjust needles as necessary to achieve gauge.

Instructions

Pants

  1. CO 40 stitches using the size 6 needles with white yarn for the hem. Knit 1, Purl 1 ribbing for 1 inch.
  2. Change to size 8 needles and red yarn. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every row) until the length measures 10 inches from cast-on edge.
  3. In the next row, decrease 5 stitches evenly across the row (you should have 35 stitches remaining). Knit 4 more rows.
  4. For the legs, divide into two sections: 17 stitches in one section for the first leg, and the remaining 18 stitches for the other leg (once you finish the first leg, go back to the second leg).
  5. For each leg, knit until it measures 8 inches from where the leg splits. BO all stitches.

Top

  1. CO 40 stitches using the size 6 needles with white yarn for the hem. Knit 1, Purl 1 ribbing for 1 inch.
  2. Change to size 8 needles and red yarn. Work in stockinette stitch for 6 inches.
  3. Start the armholes: BO 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows, then work until the piece measures 10 inches from the cast-on edge.
  4. Bind off all stitches. Set aside.

Hat

  1. CO 56 stitches using the size 6 needles with white yarn for the hem. K1, P1 ribbing for 1-inch.
  2. Change to size 8 needles and red yarn. Work in stockinette stitch until the hat measures 6 inches from cast-on edge.
  3. For the crown, decrease 4 stitches evenly on the next row (you should have 52 stitches remaining).
  4. Continue decreasing by 4 stitches every alternate row until you have about 8 stitches left.
  5. Cut yarn leaving a 12-inch tail, thread through stitches, and pull tight. Weave in all ends.

Assembly

  1. Stitch the top and pants together at the shoulder seams.
  2. Make sure to weave in all loose ends for a neat finish.
  3. Dress your baby in this snuggly outfit, taking lots of cute holiday pictures!
