Materials
- Worsted Weight Yarn in White (100g)
- Worsted Weight Yarn in Red (50g)
- Worsted Weight Yarn in Blue (50g)
- US Size 8 (5 mm) Circular Knitting Needles
- US Size 8 (5 mm) Double Pointed Needles
- Yarn Needle (for weaving in ends)
- Pom-pom Maker or Scissors (to create pom-pom)
- Stitch Marker (optional)
Gauge
18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Abbreviations
- CO - Cast On
- K - Knit
- P - Purl
- St(s) - Stitch(es)
- BO - Bind Off
Instructions
- Cast On: CO 80 stitches using white yarn.
- Ribbing: Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 2 inches to create a snug brim.
- Body of Hat: Switch to stockinette stitch (K every row) and knit until the work measures 6 inches from the cast on edge.
- Hearts Pattern: Begin the hearts pattern:
- Row 1: *K5, K2tog, K2, YO, K2, SSK, K5*
- Row 2: Knit all stitches
- Repeat Rows 1 and 2 two more times, then knit all stitches in white yarn for 4 rows to separate the hearts.
- Decreases: Begin decreasing for the crown:
- Row 1: *K8, K2tog* repeat until end of row.
- Row 2: Knit all stitches.
- Row 3: *K7, K2tog* repeat until end of row.
- Row 4: Knit all stitches.
- Continue decreasing in this manner (K6, K2tog; K5, K2tog; etc.) every other row until 10 stitches remain.
- Finish the Hat: Cut the yarn leaving a long tail, thread the tail through the remaining 10 stitches, pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in all ends.
- Pom-pom: Create a pom-pom using white yarn and attach it securely to the top of the hat.
Final Size
The finished hat should measure approximately 20 inches in circumference and 8 inches from brim to top.
