Cozy Long Cardigan

Materials

  • Yarn: Bulky weight yarn (approximately 1000-1200 yards in a burgundy color)
  • Needles: US size 10 (6 mm) circular knitting needles
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Measuring tape

Gauge

12 stitches x 16 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Check your gauge before starting to ensure your cardigan will fit correctly.

Abbreviations

  • CO: Cast On
  • k: Knit
  • p: Purl
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • RS: Right Side
  • WS: Wrong Side
  • sl st: Slip Stitch

Instructions

Back Panel

  1. CO 80 stitches.
  2. Row 1 (RS): K all stitches.
  3. Row 2 (WS): P all stitches.
  4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures 30 inches or desired length for the back.
  5. Bind off stitches.

Front Panels (Make 2)

  1. CO 40 stitches for each front panel.
  2. Row 1 (RS): K all stitches.
  3. Row 2 (WS): P all stitches.
  4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures the same length as the back panel, about 30 inches.
  5. Bind off stitches.

Sleeves (Make 2)

  1. CO 40 stitches for each sleeve.
  2. Row 1 (RS): K all stitches.
  3. Row 2 (WS): P all stitches.
  4. Increase 1 stitch at each end of every 6th row until you have 50 stitches.
  5. Continue until sleeves measure 20 inches or desired length.
  6. Bind off stitches.

Assembly

  1. Lay the back panel flat. Attach the two front panels to each side, aligning the seams.
  2. Using a whip stitch or your preferred method, sew the shoulder seams and side seams together from the underarm down to the hem.
  3. Attach the sleeves to the armholes. Sew from the top of the sleeve down the side seam, ensuring a comfortable fit.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
  2. For a neat edge, you may choose to single crochet around the cardigan's open edges.
