Materials Needed
- Yarn: DK weight yarn in beige or preferred color
- Crochet hook: Size G/4.0mm
- Darning needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Stitch markers
Gauge
4 shells = 4 inches (10 cm) using shell stitch pattern
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- sk = skip
- rep = repeat
- shell = [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same stitch]
Instructions
Body
- Foundation: Ch 200. Join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in each ch around. Join to the top of the ch-3 with sl st.
- Round 2: Ch 3, dc in next st, *ch 2, sk 2 sts, shell in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around. Join to top of ch-3 with sl st.
- Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, *ch 2, shell in ch-2 sp of next shell, ch 2, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * around. Join to top of ch-3 with sl st.
- Rounds 4-30: Rep Round 3.
Hood
- Foundation: Ch 100. Join with sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3, dc in each ch around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3.
- Rounds 2-20: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3.
- Finishing: Fold hood flat and sew top two edges together to form the top of the hood.
Finishing Touches
- Drawstring: Ch 150. Weave through the top row of the poncho body.
- Attach hood to the body by sewing the lower edge of the hood evenly around the neck opening.
- Weave in all ends with a darning needle.
- Block your poncho if necessary to relax and even out the stitches.
