Crochet Vibrant Granny Square Afghan Free Pattern
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors (suggested: red, blue, yellow, purple, orange, green, etc.)
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Gauge:
One granny square = 4 inches x 4 inches
Instructions:
Granny Square (Make 64):
- With color A, ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 1, *3 dc in ring, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. (12 dc, 4 ch-1 spaces)
- Round 2: Join color B in any ch-1 space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. (24 dc, 4 ch-1 spaces)
- Round 3: Join color C in any ch-1 space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. (36 dc, 4 ch-1 spaces)
- Round 4: Join color D in any ch-1 space, ch 3, 3 dc in same space, *ch 2, 4 dc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
- Weave in all ends.
Afghan Assembly:
- Lay out your 64 squares in an 8x8 grid, arranging colors as desired.
- Using the whip stitch or preferred joining method, connect adjacent squares until entire center is assembled.
Border:
- Round 1: With a new color, join yarn in any corner space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same space, *3 dc in each of the next sides of squares, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corners; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
- Round 2: Change color, repeat as Round 1 with color changes as desired.
- Continue adding rounds with new colors until border is the desired width.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
