Granny Square Pillow Covers

In this pattern, you will create a lovely set of granny square pillow covers. These covers are made up of multiple granny squares sewn together and feature bright and engaging colors to brighten up your living space.

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors (approximately 3-4 colors for each pillow cover)
• Hook size H/8 (5.0 mm)
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
• Measuring tape
• Pillow insert (16" x 16" or preferred size)

Gauge

Approximately 4 granny squares should equal about 4 inches square, but gauge is not critical for this project.

• ch - chain
• sl st - slip stitch
• sc - single crochet
• dc - double crochet
• sp - space

Instructions

Granny Square Pattern

1. Start Your First Square: Using the first color yarn, make a slip knot and ch 4. Join with a sl st to form a ring.
2. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc into the ring, ch 2, *3 dc into the ring, ch 2* 2 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (You will have 3 clusters of 3 dc and 3 ch-2 spaces.)
3. Round 2: Change to the second color. Sl st into the next ch-2 space, ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp. In each ch-2 sp around, repeat this (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Join with a sl st at the top of the ch 3. (You will have 6 clusters now.)
4. Round 3: Change to the third color. Sl st into the next ch-2 space, ch 3, work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp. In each ch-2 space around, repeat this (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Join with a sl st at the top of ch 3. (You will have 9 clusters now.)
5. Round 4: Continue this process with additional colors, adding one more cluster to each round until your square is about 8 inches wide, or until you reach your desired size. Use the fourth color for the last round to add a finishing touch.
6. Fasten Off: Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in all ends neatly using your tapestry needle.

Assemble the Pillow Cover

1. Make a total of 9-12 granny squares depending on the size of your pillow.
2. Lay out your squares in a 3x3 grid for a standard 16”x16” pillow. Adjust based on the number of squares you made.
3. Starting from the top, begin sewing the squares together using the whip stitch or slip stitch. Join each square to the next until complete.
4. Once you have one side completed, repeat the process for the back side of the pillow cover.
5. Once both sides are sewn together, place the pillow insert in between the two sides (you can also make it a closure-free pillow cover by sewing all four sides together without inserting a pillow.)
6. Finally, sew the remaining edges together, ensuring it is tight and secure.

Finishing

After finishing, turn your pillow cover right side out, fluff the pillow insert, and place it on your sofa or bed!
