Granny Square Tote Bag Pattern

Materials

• Worsted weight cotton yarn in assorted colors (at least 8 different colors)
• 1 skein of brown worsted weight cotton yarn for the base
• Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors

Gauge

10 double crochet stitches and 6 rows = 4 inches square

Abbreviations

• CH - Chain
• DC - Double Crochet
• SC - Single Crochet
• SL ST - Slip Stitch
• RS - Right Side

Instructions

Making the Granny Squares

1. Make a magic ring, or chain 4 and join to form a loop.
2. CH 3 (counts as the first DC), then DC 2 into the loop. CH 2 (this forms the corner).
3. DC 3 into the loop. CH 2 again.
4. Repeat Step 3 two more times, then join to the top of the starting CH 3 with a SL ST. You should have 4 clusters of 3 DC with chain spaces.
5. Fasten off and weave in ends. Make a total of 16 granny squares in assorted colors.

Joining the Squares

1. Lay out your granny squares in a 4x4 configuration, arranging them to your liking.
2. With the brown yarn, join squares using the whip stitch or slip stitch method. Place two squares with the right sides together, and whip stitch along the edges where they meet.
3. Continue joining all 16 squares into one large square panel.

Creating the Tote Bag Base

1. Using the brown yarn, CH 26.
2. Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across. (25 SC)
3. Rows 2-6: CH 1, turn, SC in each SC across. (25 SC)
4. Fasten off and weave in ends. This is the base of your bag.

Assembling the Tote Bag

1. With the right side of the granny square panel facing you, position the brown base along the bottom edge of the panel. Use the whip stitch to sew the base to the granny squares, ensuring it is nicely aligned.
2. Once it’s attached, fold the sides of the granny square panel up to form the sides of the bag.
3. Using the brown yarn, SC along the vertical side edges to secure together, forming the sides of the tote.
4. Fasten off all loose ends and weave in with a tapestry needle.

Adding Handles

1. To make the handles, CH 80 using the brown yarn.
2. Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across (79 SC).
3. Rows 2-4: CH 1, turn, SC in each SC across (79 SC).
4. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
5. Attaching them to the top of your tote, position each handle on either side of the tote and sew securely using the tapestry needle.
