Petite Posy Rosette Boots: Free Crochet Pattern for Toddler Booties

Introduction

These tiny navy booties are the perfect first project for anyone who has ever wanted to make something sweet for a little one. Worked almost entirely in simple single crochet, they build up quickly into a soft, rounded little shoe with a plain round toe and a cozy cuff. The magic happens at the very end, when three tiny white lace rosettes are stitched into a posy on the outer ankle, giving the boots that nostalgic 90s baby-shower charm. The finished booties are squishy, matte, and about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) long, just right for a toddler's foot. If you can make a chain and a single crochet, you can absolutely make these.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn (MC): Baby-soft acrylic DK weight yarn (approx. 300 yds/100g), navy — approx. 60 yds
  • Yarn (CC): Same baby-soft acrylic DK weight yarn, white — approx. 15 yds
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook
  • Stitch marker (one per bootie, to mark the first stitch of each round)
  • Tapestry needle (a blunt, large-eye needle for sewing rosettes and weaving in ends)
  • Scissors
  • Finished size: Fits toddler foot length approx. 4.5 in / 11.5 cm. Cuff depth approx. 1 in / 2.5 cm. Rosettes approx. 0.5 in / 1.25 cm across.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

  • ch – chain: yarn over the hook, pull the loop through the loop on your hook. Creates a small loop.
  • sc – single crochet: insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops. One loop remains.
  • hdc – half double crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.
  • dc – double crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through last 2 loops.
  • sl st – slip stitch: insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull the loop straight through both the stitch and the loop on your hook. Creates a nearly invisible join.
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 together: insert hook into first stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops. This decreases by one stitch. (Not used in this pattern, but listed so you recognize it.)
  • MR – magic ring: a loop of yarn you wrap around your fingers, then work stitches into, and pull tight to close the center hole.
  • st(s) – stitch(es).
  • rnd – round: one complete circle of stitches worked around.
  • MC – main color (navy).
  • CC – contrasting color (white).
  • rep – repeat.
  • turn – flip your work over so you can work back the other way.
  • fasten off – cut the yarn, pull the tail through the last loop, and tighten.

Gauge

20 sc x 22 rounds = 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet worked in the round.

Gauge matters because it tells you whether your bootie will actually fit a toddler foot. If your stitches are too big, the bootie comes out too large; too small, and it won't go on. To check: with your 3.5 mm hook and MC, make a magic ring and work 6 sc into it, then continue in continuous rounds of sc, increasing as needed, until your swatch is at least 4 in (10 cm) wide. Lay it flat and measure across 20 stitches and up 22 rounds. If you have more stitches than 20 in 4 in, your tension is tight — try a slightly larger hook. If fewer, try a smaller hook. Always swatch before starting.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Use a stitch marker. Because the bootie is worked in continuous rounds (a spiral), there is no join to tell you where a round begins. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go.
  • Don't pull the yarn too tight. New crocheters tend to tug. Keep your loops relaxed so the fabric stays soft and stretchy enough to slip onto a little foot.
  • Count every round. The stitch counts in parentheses are your safety net. If a count is off, fix it before moving on — it's much easier than ripping back later.
  • Keep the magic ring snug. After Rnd 1, pull the tail firmly to close the center hole so the toe looks smooth and round.
  • Work the flat section gently. When you turn for the heel and toe shaping, don't twist your work — keep the right side facing out.
  • Make both booties before sewing rosettes. That way you can place the posy clusters symmetrically on the outer ankle of each bootie.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Bootie (make 2)

With MC, work in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated. Use a stitch marker to mark the first st of each round.

Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc into ring. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: [Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5: [Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (30 sc)

Rnd 6: [Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (36 sc)

Rnds 7–12: Sc in each st around. (36 sc)

Shape Heel and Toe (worked flat for foot opening)

Rnd 13: Sc in next 18 sts, ch 1, turn. (18 sc)

Rnds 14–18: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. (18 sc)

Rnd 19: Sc in each st across, do not turn. Ch 1, join to first st of Rnd 12 with sl st to close the foot opening. (18 sc)

Cuff

Rnd 20: Sc evenly around entire foot opening (approx. 36 sc).

Rnds 21–24: Sc in each st around. (36 sc)

Rnd 25: Sc in each st around, sl st to first st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Rosette (make 3 with CC)

Rnd 1: MR, 5 sc into ring, sl st to first sc to join. (5 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, [dc, ch 2, sl st] in same st, *[sl st, ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st] in next st; rep from * around. (5 petals)

Fasten off, leaving a 6-in tail for sewing.

Assembly and Finishing

Arrange the posy: On each bootie, arrange the 3 rosettes in a tight triangular cluster on the outer ankle side, approx. 0.5 in (1.25 cm) below the cuff edge. Lay them flat against the navy surface and check that both booties mirror each other.

Sew the rosettes: Thread the CC tail onto your tapestry needle. Working from the inside of the bootie so the knot hides inside, take small stitches through the base of each petal, catching the navy fabric underneath. Sew all three rosettes securely, then pass the needle through to the inside and tie off.

Weave in ends: Thread each remaining tail onto the tapestry needle and run it through the inside of several stitches (about 1 in / 2.5 cm), then trim close. Never knot on the outside where it can rub a little foot.

Block: Lightly mist the booties with water (or gently steam them), then stuff the toes with a little tissue or a small sock to hold the round shape. Pat the cuffs straight and let them dry completely. This evens out the single crochet texture and gives the toe its smooth, rounded finish.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the colors: Swap navy for any baby-soft shade — dusty pink, sage, or cream — and make the rosettes in a contrasting tone. A single-color version with tonal rosettes is lovely too.
  • Adjust the size: For a smaller baby bootie, stop the increases at Rnd 5 (30 sc) and work fewer plain rounds; for a larger toddler size, add one more increase round (Rnd 7: [sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] around = 42 sc) and add plain rounds to match. Always check your gauge and measure the foot length.
  • Substitute yarn: Any DK-weight baby-soft acrylic or cotton-blend works well. Avoid fuzzy or slippery yarns for a first project, as they make counting stitches harder.
  • Embellish differently: Use just one rosette per bootie for a minimalist look, or add a tiny crochet leaf in a soft green behind the posy for extra charm.
