Simple Woven Stitch Mat
This project is ideal for beginners who want to practice basic knitting techniques and create a functional item for their home. The woven stitch creates a textured fabric that is both sturdy and attractive, perfect for a mat or placemat.
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (200 yards)
- Knitting needles size US 8 (5mm)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
Gauge:
20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in Woven Stitch pattern.
Abbreviations:
- CO: Cast on
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- Sl: Slip stitch purlwise
- wyif: With yarn in front
- Rep: Repeat
- BO: Bind off
Instructions:
- Cast On:
CO 36 stitches loosely. - Row 1 (Right Side):
*K1, sl1 wyif; rep from * to end of row. - Row 2 (Wrong Side):
*P1, sl1 wyif; rep from * to end of row. - Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures approximately 18 inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a Row 2.
- Bind Off:
BO all stitches loosely in pattern. - Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
Finishing:
Block the mat to the final measurements if needed, to ensure a clean and flat finish.
