Baby Beanie with Pom-Pom

Materials

• Medium weight yarn (100% acrylic or cotton) in the following colors:
  • Light grey (Approx. 50g)
  • White (Approx. 20g)
  • Mustard yellow (Approx. 20g)
  • Light green (Approx. 20g)
• Knitting needles: US size 6 (4mm) for the body of the hat
• Knitting needles: US size 8 (5mm) for the ribbing
• Pom-pom maker or a piece of cardboard
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch using US size 6 needles.

Instructions

Beanie Body

1. Using US size 6 (4mm) needles and light grey yarn, CO 80 stitches.
2. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
3. Work in ribbing pattern (K2, P2) for 1.5 inches (about 12 rounds).
4. Switch to stockinette stitch (K all stitches) for the next 5 inches until the total height of the hat is 6.5 inches from the cast-on edge.
5. To add stripes, alternate colors every 2 rows. For example, switch to white for 2 rows, then back to light grey, then switch to yellow, and finally to light green.

Crown Shaping

1. Prepare to shape the crown by decreasing:
2. Round 1: *K8, K2tog* around (72 stitches remain).
3. Round 2: K around.
4. Round 3: *K7, K2tog* around (64 stitches remain).
5. Round 4: K around.
6. Continue this process, decreasing 8 stitches every other round until you have 8 stitches remaining.
7. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in any loose ends.

Pom-Pom

1. Using light grey yarn, create a pom-pom using a pom-pom maker or wrap yarn around a piece of cardboard about 50 times.
2. Tie a strong piece of yarn tightly around the center, securing it.
3. Cut through the loops, fluff up the pom-pom, and trim it to your desired round shape.
4. Sew the pom-pom to the top of the hat securely.

Finishing

1. Weave in any remaining ends using a tapestry needle.
