Step-by-Step Instructions

Abbreviations

  • CO: Cast on
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • K2tog: Knit two together
  • SSK: Slip, slip, knit (left-leaning decrease)
  • YO: Yarn over
  • St(s): Stitch(es)
  • RS: Right side
  • WS: Wrong side

Pillow Front (Make 2 identical halves)

Section 1: Bottom Border (Satin Yarn - Color A)

With larger needles (US 7) and Color A, CO 80 sts.

  • Row 1 (RS): K2, *P2, K2; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 2 (WS): P2, *K2, P2; repeat from * to end.
  • Repeat Rows 1-2 for 2 inches (approximately 12 rows). End with a WS row.

Section 2: Lace Panel Insert (Color B)

Switch to smaller needles (US 6) and Color B. Work the lace pattern as follows:

  • Row 1 (RS): K1, *YO, SSK, K1, K2tog, YO, K1; repeat from * to last st, K1.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl all sts.
  • Row 3 (RS): K1, *K1, YO, SSK, K2tog, YO, K2; repeat from * to last st, K1.

Section 3: Middle Body (Satin Yarn - Color A)

Switch back to larger needles (US 7) and Color A.

Section 4: Lace Panel Insert (Color B)

Repeat Section 2 exactly (4 inches of lace pattern).

Section 5: Top Border (Satin Yarn - Color A)

Switch to larger needles (US 7) and Color A.

  • Work in 2x2 Ribbing (K2, P2) as in Section 1 for 2 inches. End with a WS row.
  • Bind off loosely in pattern.

Finishing

  1. Block both pieces to the same dimensions (approximately 16 inches wide x 18 inches tall). Pin out the lace panels to open up the pattern. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Sew the pieces together: With RS together, using Color A and tapestry needle, sew the two pieces together along three sides (bottom and two sides), leaving the top open.
  3. Turn right side out.
  4. Insert a 16x16 inch pillow form.
  5. Sew the top closed using a mattress stitch for an invisible seam.
