Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn (approximately 100 yards)
  • Crochet hook (size H/8, 5.0 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:

10 double crochet (dc) stitches = 4"; 6 rows = 4" in stitch pattern.

Size:

This pattern is designed to fit newborns with a head circumference of approximately 14"-16".

Instructions:

Base of the Beanie:

  1. Make a magic ring.
  2. Row 1: Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in magic ring. Pull the ring tight and join with a slip stitch to top of starting chain. (12 dc)
  3. Row 2: Chain 3, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around. Join. (24 dc)
  4. Row 3: Chain 3, dc in same stitch, *dc in next stitch, 2 dc in the following stitch*; repeat from * around. Join. (36 dc)
  5. Row 4: Chain 3, *dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the following stitch*; repeat from * around. Join. (48 dc)
  6. Row 5: Chain 3, dc in the same stitch, *dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in the following stitch*; repeat from * around. Join. (60 dc)

Body of the Beanie:

  1. Row 6-12: Chain 3, dc in same stitch, 1 dc in each stitch around. Join. (60 dc)
  2. Row 13: Chain 3, *dc in next 3 stitches, shell stitch in the following stitch (5 dc in one stitch)*; repeat from * around. Join.
  3. Row 14: Chain 1, *sc in shell, chain 2, skip next 2 stitches*; repeat from * around. Join.
  4. Row 15: Chain 3, *dc in chain 2 space from previous row, shell stitch in the next shell stitch*; repeat from * around. Join.

Ruffle Edge:

  1. Row 16: Chain 1, sc in each stitch around. Join.
  2. Row 17: Chain 3, *dc in next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch*; repeat from * around. Join.

Finishing:

Weave in any loose ends. You can add a decorative pom-pom or flower embellishment on top for extra flair!
