Materials
- Bulky weight yarn (approximately 100 yards)
- Size N/15 (10 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Size
Adult size (adjustable for larger or smaller sizes)
Gauge
8 stitches and 5 rows = 4 inches in twisted rib pattern
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch)
- Slip stitch (sl st)
- Half double crochet (hdc)
- Front post double crochet (fpdc)
- Back post double crochet (bpdc)
Pattern Instructions
Brim
- Ch 40 (or adjust for desired width), join with sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each ch around. Join with sl st to top of first hdc (40 hdc).
- Round 2: Ch 1, *fpdc in next stitch, bpdc in next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with sl st (40 stitches).
- Repeat Round 2 until brim measures about 3 inches.
Body
- Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. Join with sl st (40 hdc).
- Round 2: Ch 1, *hdc in next stitch, fpdc in next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with sl st (40 stitches).
- Continue the pattern alternating between hdc and fpdc until the piece measures about 8 inches from the brim.
Crowning
- Begin to decrease: Round 1: Ch 1, *hdc in next 3 stitches, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. (30 stitches)
- Round 2: Ch 1, *hdc in next 2 stitches, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. (20 stitches)
- Round 3: Ch 1, *hdc in next stitch, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. (10 stitches)
- Round 4: Ch 1, hdc2tog around. (5 stitches)
- Cut yarn leaving a long tail, thread through the remaining stitches, pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Finishing
- Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
- Optional: Add a pom-pom on top for extra flair!
