Whimsical Textured Beanie with Ear Flaps

This adorable beanie is perfect for keeping your little one's head warm while also serving as a fun photo prop. The ear flaps add an extra layer of warmth while giving it a playful flair.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (approx. 150 yards)
  • crochet hook (size H/8 or 5.0 mm)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

12 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in double crochet

Size:

This pattern is designed for ages 6-12 months, with a head circumference of approximately 16-18 inches.

Stitches Used:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip stitch (sl st)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)

Pattern:

Beanie Base

  1. Ch 4, join to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in the ring, join with sl st to top of ch 2 (12 dc).
  3. Round 2: Ch 2, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around, join (24 dc).
  4. Round 3: Ch 2, *dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join (36 dc).
  5. Round 4: Ch 2, *dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join (48 dc).
  6. Continue working in rounds until the beanie measures about 6 inches from the top. Finish with one round of sc to create a clean edge.

Ear Flaps (make 2)

  1. Attach yarn at the side of the beanie where you want the first ear flap. Ch 2 and work 6 hdc in the next stitch.
  2. Row 1: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each stitch (6 hdc).
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog twice, hdc in next 2 stitches (4 hdc).
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog twice, hdc in next stitch (2 hdc).
  5. Row 4: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog (1 hdc). Fasten off.
  6. Repeat for the second ear flap on the opposite side of the beanie.

Finishing Touches

  • Weave in all ends, and you may add a pom-pom or embellishments if desired.

Care Instructions:

This beanie is machine washable and can be dried on low heat to maintain its shape.
