Whimsical Textured Meadow Hat Free Pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn (about 200 yards)
  • 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
  • 4 mm (US 6) crochet hook for the brim
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Gauge:

14 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in single crochet. Adjust hook size to get the correct gauge.

Sizes:

This hat is designed to fit most adults, with a head circumference ranging from 20 to 24 inches.

Pattern Instructions:

Brim:

  1. Using the 4 mm hook, ch 10.
  2. Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across (9 sc).
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in the back loop only across (9 sc).
  4. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 18 inches long. Do not fasten off.
  5. Join the ends together with a slip stitch to form a band. Turn the band inside out.

Main Hat Body:

  1. Change to the 4.5 mm hook. Ch 50 to start the main hat.
  2. Join to form a circle with a slip stitch, being careful not to twist the chain.
  3. Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in the same stitch, work 1 hdc in each stitch around (total 50 hdc). Join with a slip stitch to top of ch 2.
  4. Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in the next stitch, *fpdc around the next stitch, hdc in the next; repeat from * around. Join.
  5. Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in the next stitch, *bpdc around the next stitch, hdc in the next; repeat from * around. Join.
  6. Continue alternating rounds of fpdc and bpdc until the hat measures about 8 inches from the brim.
  7. To finish, decrease in every 5th stitch around for the last round, then fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly:

Attach the brim to the hat using slip stitches around the edge. Make sure it fits snugly. Weave in any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
