Classic Monochrome Gingham Slouchy Beanie Pattern

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors (e.g., Black and White) – approximately 150 yards each
  • Size US 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles, 16 inches
  • Size US 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles (for crown)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Instructions

Cast On

Using Color A, cast on 80 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.

Ribbing

Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 inches.

Gingham Pattern

Switch to Color B and work the following pattern:

Round 1: *K4 with Color A, K4 with Color B; repeat from * to end.
Round 2: *K4 with Color B, K4 with Color A; repeat from * to end.

Repeat these two rounds until your work measures 8 inches from the cast-on edge.

Crown Shaping

Switch to double-pointed needles when necessary.

Round 1: *K8, K2tog; repeat from * to end (72 stitches).
Round 2: *K7, K2tog; repeat from * to end (64 stitches).
Round 3: *K6, K2tog; repeat from * to end (56 stitches).
Round 4: *K5, K2tog; repeat from * to end (48 stitches).
Round 5: *K4, K2tog; repeat from * to end (40 stitches).
Round 6: *K3, K2tog; repeat from * to end (32 stitches).
Round 7: *K2, K2tog; repeat from * to end (24 stitches).
Round 8: *K1, K2tog; repeat from * to end (16 stitches).
Round 9: K2tog around (8 stitches).

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.

Finishing

Weave in all ends and block your beanie to shape.
