Anonymous July 30, 2026

Introducing the Berry Blossom Baby Dress

Knit a sweet and sophisticated baby dress featuring a delicate berry stitch pattern on the yoke and a softly flared A-line skirt. This pattern creates a timeless, heirloom-quality garment perfect for special occasions or everyday charm. The Berry Blossom Baby Dress is designed for babies aged 6–24 months and uses a beautiful textured stitch that mimics tiny berries, alternating between a soft blush pink and cream. The round yoke, short puff sleeves, and gentle A-line silhouette make this a classic piece you'll be proud to gift or keep.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Fingering weight (4-ply) yarn in two colors:
    • Main Color (MC) - Soft Blush Pink: 400 (450, 500) yards
    • Contrast Color (CC) - Cream: 100 (110, 120) yards
    • Recommended: Drops Baby Merino or similar soft, machine-washable fingering weight yarn.
  • Needles:
    • US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles (24-inch or longer) for yoke and body
    • US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles for ribbing and borders
  • Notions: Stitch markers (including one unique marker for beginning of round), tapestry needle, 3 small buttons (approx. ½ inch diameter).
  • Gauge: 28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch on US 3 needles, after blocking. Take time to check gauge for best fit.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Sizes

This pattern is written for three sizes: 6-12 months (12-18 months, 18-24 months). Instructions are given for the smallest size first, with larger sizes in parentheses.

Yoke

  1. With MC and US 3 needles, cast on 72 (80, 88) stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.
  2. Knit 4 rounds in stockinette (knit every round).
  3. Switch to CC. Knit 2 rounds.
  4. Berry Stitch Pattern (worked over 4 stitches):
    • Round 1 (CC): *K1, p1, k1, p1* repeat around.
    • Round 2 (CC): *P1, k1, p1, k1* repeat around.
    • Round 3 (MC): *Knit 3 stitches together, then without dropping from left needle, yarn over, knit same 3 stitches together again (this creates a bobble), k1* repeat around.
    • Round 4 (MC): Knit all stitches.
    • Repeat these 4 rounds for the yoke. Work until yoke measures 3 (3.5, 4) inches from cast-on edge, ending with a MC round.
  5. Increase Round (MC): *K8, M1L* repeat around. (81, 90, 99 stitches)
  6. Knit 1 round.
  7. Increase Round: *K9, M1L* repeat around. (90, 100, 110 stitches)
  8. Knit 1 round.
  9. Increase Round: *K10, M1L* repeat around. (99, 110, 121 stitches)
  10. Knit 1 round.
  11. Continue increasing every other round, adding 1 stitch between increases each time (e.g., next increase: *K11, M1L*, then *K12, M1L*, etc.), until you have 180 (200, 220) stitches. Knit 2 rounds even after the last increase.

Divide for Body and Sleeves

  1. Knit 26 (29, 32) stitches for right back, place next 38 (42, 46) stitches on a holder or waste yarn for right sleeve.
  2. Cast on 4 stitches underarm using the backward loop method.
  3. Knit 52 (58, 64) stitches for front.
  4. Place next 38 (42, 46) stitches on a holder for left sleeve.
  5. Cast on 4 stitches underarm.
  6. Knit remaining 26 (29, 32) stitches for left back. Total body stitches: 112 (124, 136).

Body

  1. Knit in stockinette (knit every round) until body measures 5 (6, 7) inches from underarm.
  2. Skirt Increase Round: *K4, M1L* repeat around. (140, 155, 170 stitches)
  3. Knit 3 rounds.
  4. Skirt Increase Round: *K5, M1L* repeat around. (168, 186, 204 stitches)
  5. Knit 3 rounds.
  6. Skirt Increase Round: *K6, M1L* repeat around. (196, 217, 238 stitches)
  7. Knit until body measures 8 (9, 10) inches from underarm, or desired length.

Hem

  1. Switch to US 2 needles. Knit 4 rounds for garter stitch border (knit every round).
  2. Bind off loosely knitwise. Tip: Use a needle one size larger for bind-off if needed to keep edge stretchy.

Sleeves

  1. Transfer held sleeve stitches (38, 42, 46) to US 3 needles.
  2. Pick up and knit 4 stitches from the underarm cast-on (use the cast-on loops). Total sleeve stitches: 42 (46, 50).
  3. Place marker and join in the round. Knit in stockinette for 1 inch.
  4. Switch to US 2 needles. Knit 4 rounds garter stitch (knit every round).
  5. Bind off loosely knitwise.
  6. Repeat for second sleeve.

Button Band

  1. Left Back (buttonhole side): With US 2 needles and MC, pick up and knit 3 stitches for every 4 rows along the left back opening (the side where buttons will be). Tip: Pick up stitches evenly by inserting needle into the edge stitch and wrapping yarn.
  2. Knit 4 rows garter stitch. Bind off.
  3. Right Back (button band): With US 2 needles and MC, pick up and knit the same number of stitches along the right back opening.
  4. Knit 3 rows garter stitch.
  5. Buttonhole row: K2, yo, k2tog, (k4, yo, k2tog) repeat to end. Adjust spacing so buttonholes align with the 3 buttons.
  6. Knit 1 more row garter stitch. Bind off.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Tip: Weave ends on the wrong side for a clean finish.
  2. Block gently to shape: soak in lukewarm water, gently squeeze out excess, lay flat on a towel, and shape to measurements. Allow to dry completely.
  3. Sew 3 buttons opposite the buttonholes on the left back band. Tip: Use matching thread and secure buttons tightly.

Your Berry Blossom Baby Dress is complete! This heirloom-quality piece will be cherished for years. Enjoy the delicate texture and sweet silhouette—perfect for photos, parties, or everyday snuggles.
